The unique Village of Mount Horeb, Wisconsin (a.k.a. Mt Horeb, Mt Horeb) resides in Dane County in the south-central part of the state and is today a suburb of the state capitol, Madison. The local Chamber of Commerce calls Mt. Horeb's main street the "Trollway," because troll statues and themes decorate many area businesses. This reputation reflects Mount Horeb's founding by Norwegian immigrants in the 1870s and the growth of its largely Norwegian population throughout the last century..

Mount Horeb was named by Englishman George Wright (not by the Norwegians, as many have assumed). Wright and his bride had emigrated from England and relocated in 1858 to a prairie farm home about a mile and a half northeast on Military Road outside of Blue Mounds Township, Wisconsin. (Military Road had become the main travel route between Madison, Blue Mounds and Dodgeville, after it was built in 1837 - at the expense of the federal government - to move supplies from Army bases throughout Wisconsin. In 1985 the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources transformed a long-abandoned railway along Military Road into a 39-mile stretch trail for bicycling, hiking, snow-mobiling and cross-country skiing The trail today is known as The Military Ridge Trail.)

Wright was active in Blue Mounds Township as it grew and was appointed as postmaster of a new post office to be built on his hilltop land. After searching the Bible, the lay minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church came upon Exodus, chapter 3, which refers to a Mount Horeb as "The mountain of God." Upon finding that reference, Wright selected the name for the new host community since it reflected the high elevation of his land and the beauty of the surrounding area. In 1867, when the Wrights moved to Iowa, the post office was brought to the little settlement called the “Corners” which briefly became “Horeb’s Corners.” But the name was officially recorded as “Mount Horeb.".

The nearby Cave of the Mounds, the "most significant cave in the upper Midwest" and a designated National Natural Landmark, lies just off U.S. Highways 18/151 in Blue Mounds, WI. In 1939, Cave of the Mounds was accidentally discovered on an early farmsite by workers who were blasting limestone from a quarry. The blast tore the face off the quarry and revealed a great underground tunnel. All quarrying stopped and was never resumed. The United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service designated Cave of the Mounds a National Natural Landmark because the site possesses "exceptional value as an illustration of the nation’s natural heritage and contributes to a better understanding of man’s environment".

Today known as the “Troll Capital of the World,” Mt Horeb’s Main Street is lined with life-size mythical creatures. Carved out of the trunks of trees by sculptor Michael Feeney, the trolls guide visitors through the historic neighborhoods of Mount Horeb, often pointing to places to shop, eat and relax. .

Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, with a population of close to 6,000, is rich with history and has maintained its link to the past with the preservation of its many cultural celebrations, antique buildings and homes. The village was even recently featured on the ABC television show, "My Kind of Town." Residents and visitors alike enjoy a small-town atmosphere which brings with it a spirit of community and neighborliness. Mt. Horeb’s Main Street is a center of activity where residents frequent numerous specialty shops and antique shops, including four large antique malls with over 100 individual dealers and great food!
