Situated on blue Lake Mendota, the City of Middleton, Wisconsin, began as a popular ancient campsite for the Algonquin Indians, known as mound builders. Later the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) Indians became the dominant tribe in the region. French missionaries and fur traders were the first non-natives to explore the area during its existence under the flags of France and Britain before the new United States purchased the land in 1787.

Middleton, Wisconsin, part of Dane County, is an intriguing and satisfying mixture of fascinating stories about proud and genuine individuals whose lives and spirits built the community. French fur trader Michael St. Cyr, for one, was known to warmly welcome the friendship of his Native American customers. As European immigration to the new nation grew, many Germans found their way into southern Wisconsin to build their new homes, businesses and lives.

As the railroad made its way west, through the Madison region, in 1856 Middleton Station, as it was originally named (after a town in Vermont), became the site of the first station between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River. That station was the hub of what was to become downtown Middleton - and it still survives today. In a few short years, Middleton’s first inn and wagon shop opened for business. During the American Civil War, escaping slaves took refuge in the underground railroad that ran through the cellars beneath what is now the Stamm House restaurant. Middleton’s reputation for providing a warm welcome to visitors dates back in history and proudly continues today.
